#DelhiViolence2020 | It Was A Pre-Planned Massacre | Arundhati Roy

“I’m not willing to call these riots. They were not riots. This was a pre-planned massacre. This massacre was designed by the state to crush the protest. This particular ruling party has come to power on the basis of false flag attacks and massacres.“ Says author Arundhati Roy as she lays bare the truth of the violence that surrounded North East Delhi two years ago.

Since December 2019, protests against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) had been growing stronger across the country. On 24 February 2020, violence erupted in different parts of North East Delhi as mobs of Hindu nationalist men attacked Muslim neighbourhoods. For over 2 days and nights, violence and arson continued with no intervention from Delhi Police.

A people’s tribunal was organised to mark the completion of two years since the carnage, and take forward the much-needed discourse on the lives of the victims. It comprised of the National Federation of Indian Women, All India Democratic Women’s Association, the Constitutional Conduct Group, People’s Union of Civil Liberties, United Against Hate, and Karwan -e –Mohabbat.
