UP Election 2022 | Stray Cattle, Astray Governance 

As elections in Uttar Pradesh (UP) move towards a closure, ‘awara pashu’ or stray cattle is becoming increasingly potent an issue much to the discomfort of the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

“So far, the people transporting these animals from one state or district to another were largely from the Muslim community. Then terrible attacks began happening on people earning a legitimate livelihood buying and selling these animals. We all know what happened to Pehlu Khan, a cattle trader.”

The effects of cattle slaughter ban – its strict enforcement by the Yogi Adityanath-led BJP government – are clearly seen on the ground.
