If The Soul Of India Is Lost, What Are We Going To Save? | Mridula Mukherjee
Mahatma Gandhi once said…”If our hearts are divided, how will we unite the nation? If the soul of India is lost, what are we going to save? What is country without a soul?” Listen to historian Mridula Mukherjee as she highlights the complicity of the state in the violence that took place in various parts of North-East Delhi 2 years ago.
In December 2019, protests surrounded the nation as people from different parts of the country took to the streets and raised their voices against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), National Register Of Citizens (NRC) and National Population Register (NPR). The people of India refused to be divided along the lines of religion. In February 2020, in order to curb the protests, mobs of Hindu nationalist men attacked and looted Muslim neighbourhoods in North East Delhi. Weeks later, due to the nationwide lockdown, the anti-CAA protests came to a standstill.
2 years later, we must look at the role played by those in power in the death of several people, loss of livelihood of thousands and with absolutely no compensation provided the victims continue to struggle to get their lives back to normal.
