“Baba Saheb Ambedkar once said a remarkable thing that Constitutional morality is not a sentiment that comes to us naturally. We have to cultivate it. UAPA has come into existence only to give the power to the State to escape the questions that they are faced with. The process of incarceration becomes the punishment itself.” says research fellow at JNU, Apeksha Priyadarshini.
The Delhi Police named 1500+ people in 342 chargesheets, made 1700+ FIRs in relation with the communal riots of north east Delhi in February 2020. National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) reports that the rate of conviction of those accused under UAPA across the country in 5 years till 2019 was less than 2%.
