Why is Gulfisha such a threat to a mighty state, to 56-inches that her being free is a serious danger and that she must be incarcerated? asks journalist Arfa Khanum Sherwani as she reminds us why people like Gulfisha are essential for our freedom today.
9th October 2021, marked 18 months of incarceration of 26-year-old Gulfisha Fatima. An Urdu Masters student of Delhi university, an MBA graduate, a radio jockey — Gul who belongs to Seelampur area of North East Delhi, was a part of the peaceful and vibrant anti CAA-NPR-NRC movement. She played an integral part in spreading awareness among the women of north-east Delhi at the sit-in protests. Gulfisha’s ‘crime’ is that she decided to speak out against a government and an ideology of hate that dehumanises and inflicts the most brutal violence on Muslim lives.
Her ‘crime’ is that she believed and worked for the education, leadership and emancipation of women who have been historically marginalised.
